MARION (KWWL) -

Nicholas Luerkens has been arrested for the murder of Lynnsey Donald.

Luerkens was released from St. Luke's Hospital.  An arrest warrant had been issued for Luerkens on the charge of 1st degree Murder for the homicide of Lynnsey Donald, with a $1,000,000 bond.

Luerkens was immediately taken into custody on the Murder warrant and was taken to the Linn County.

A woman was apparently stabbed and killed Tuesday in the parking lot of a Marion Hy-Vee by a man she used to live with, according to new information Wednesday from police.

Lynnsey Donald, 29, of Marion, and her alleged attacker -- 32-year-old Nicholas Luerkens of Cedar Rapids -- previously lived together, according to Marion Police Chief Harry Daugherty.

Donald had moved out of that residence a few months ago, Daugherty said.

Police say Luerkens wielded a "large kitchen-type knife" in the attack, which police recovered.

Luerkens remains in the hospital for treatment of self-inflicted stab wounds. Police said there was "no timetable" for his release.

The investigation continues, and charges are pending.

PREVIOUS STORY:

A woman was attacked and killed by a man she knew as she was walking out of an eastern Iowa grocery store.

29-year-old Lynnsey Donald of Marion died after she was stabbed walking out of a Hy-Vee in Marion around 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Marion Police Chief Harry Daugherty says the suspect is 32-year-old Nicholas Luerkens of Cedar Rapids.

Luerkens apparently also tried to kill himself after the attack, and was taken to St. Luke's Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to Daugherty.

Police say they are treating the incident as a homicide investigation and had a portion of the Marion Hy-Vee parking lot roped off through Tuesday evening.

Charges against Luerkens are pending.

The Hy-Vee, located at 3600 10th Avenue in Marion, continues to be open for business.
