A majority of Americans will take a vacation this year but vacation spending looks to be slightly down.

According to FatWallet.com's annual vacation spending survey, 8 in 10 Americans will take at least one vacation this year.

Of those taking a vacation, 60 percent will book it 1-6 months in advance. That's up 25 percent from last year.

About 12 percent will just wing it, go to their destination and take what's available.

The survey also found Americans will be spending a little less on their vacations this year than they did last year.

Over 40 percent will spend more than $1,500. That's down from 46 percent in 2014.

The majority will spend less than that.
