Members of a Facebook group known as “Take Back Waterloo” are hoping to do just that, by reducing crime and violence in the city. Also stemming from the group – a new neighborhood association, announced at the city council meeting Monday night.

Chris Shimp, of Waterloo, presented the idea to the council.

“We have a very ambitious group,” he said. “We actually plan to use social media as a form of communication to help out so we're not just going door to door with fliers.”

Shimp said they plan to form the neighborhood association in the bounded area between 11th St., E. Ridgeway Ave., Williston Ave. and Baltimore St. in Waterloo.

Shimp said they hope to improve the city by going through the formal approval process.

“We want to work with this entire city, work with every department from the streets department to the police department and give neighbors an avenue where they can bring information forward that needs to go the police,” he said.

Mayor Buck Clark praised the action.

“It's one of the many keys we need to get more neighbors more involved in their neighborhoods to address some of the issues that we're having,” said Clark. “So God bless you and what you're doing.”

It would be the 34th neighborhood association listed in the city. However, many are inactive or don't meet on a regular basis.
