CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School Academic Decathlon team took third place at the national competition last weekend in California.

For the 18th time in 19 years, Cedar Rapids Jefferson represented Iowa at the 10-event competition.

Jefferson took third place in Division Two with 42,694.1 points. Their third place finish is the highest by an Iowa team since 2008.

The eight-member team earned 16 individual medals, a record for an Iowa team. Chase Muenzenmeyer earned seven individual medals himself, also an Iowa record.

Tommy Waltmann's 8,165 points was the highest for the team. The team named Lauren Brown their MVP.

Other members of the team include Gina Buelow, Drake Krambeer, Cora Lassen, Sabrina Martin and Logan Thompson. The coach is Kevin Darrow.

Categories in Academic Decathlon include art history, interview, science, language and literature, music, mathematics, social science, essay, speech and economics.

The theme for this season was New Alternatives In Energy: Ingenuity and Innovation.
