IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

To celebrate a day known as the marijuana holiday, University of Iowa students handed out "pot brownies" on the campus Pentacrest.

The brownies didn't contain any illegal substances, but students used the 4-20 holiday to have conversations with other students about drug policy to end prohibition.

Organizers with Young Americans for Liberty say they want this generation to be the last one impacted by what they call the "misguided war on drugs."

"Draw attention to the failed drug policies of the U.S., to recognize how tossing people into prison for a non-violent offense is destroying lives," said Mike Corrie, president of Young Americans for Liberty. "It's just contributing to the illegal market which is riddled with violence."

Corrie says the brownie distribution comes at a critical time as policymakers in Iowa and even across the country are looking at measures to loosen marijuana prohibition.

Last week the Iowa Senate passed the medical marijuana expansion bill, but it'll likely die in the Republican-controlled House.
