CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Cedar Rapids police say a Hiawatha man now faces homicide by vehicle charges after Friday's chase.

They say 35-year-old Stephen Cook of Palo died at an Iowa City hospital from injuries sustained in a crash during the chase.

Police say Lawson Chadwick, 47, of Hiawatha collided with a Cedar Rapids Water Department truck driven by Cook during the chase Friday.

Lawson is in the Linn County Jail on several charges related to the incident.

Police say additional charges are likely.

Cook was an employee in the Meter Shop of the Cedar Rapids Water Department.

Previous Story:

Cedar Rapids Police have arrested the man they say led them on a high-speed chase through a residential neighborhood.

Lawson Chadwick, 47, of Hiawatha, faces several charges including Serious Injury by Vehicle and Eluding.

Police say Chadwick wouldn't pull over for a traffic stop Friday morning, then sped away through a residential Cedar Rapids before colliding with a city vehicle, injuring the city employee seriously in the crash..

Police say an officer attempted to stop a red pick-up truck near 10th Street and 8th Avenue SW for a registration violation at around 8:39 a.m. Friday.

They say Chadwick refused to stop and drove through the Hawkeye Oil parking lot and proceeded eastbound on 8th Avenue SW.

They say he then turned right into the 800 block alley between 8th and 9th streets SW, proceeded to the railroad tracks, then came out behind 1041 10th Street SW and turned onto 9th Street SW and accelerated at a high rate of speed.

The officer, who was more than a block behind the vehicle, according to police, watched the suspect run a stop sign at 15th Avenue and 9th Street SW.

They say Chadwick then ran the stop sign on 15th Avenue and 9th Street SW at around 8:40 a.m. when it collided with a City of Cedar Rapids Water Department van driving east on 16th Ave. SW.

The pick-up struck the side of the van, causing the van to roll.

The city employee, who police only describe as a 35-year-old male, was thrown from the vehicle and seriously injured. He was taken to an Iowa City hospital for treatment

The entire pursuit lasted about six blocks.
