WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Police say a Waterloo man is now in the hospital after stabbing himself when officers tried to arrest him.

Police say they were attempting to arrest 19-year-old Marcus Sykes at his home in the 600 block of Keystone Street in Waterloo for a probation violation.

When they knocked on the door, they say they believe they saw him searching for a weapon, and heard screaming inside.

A report indicates a woman came out of the home and told them to come inside fast, because Sykes was trying to kill himself.

Police say Sykes made comments about not wanting to go to jail.

When police entered the kitchen, Sykes had reportedly used a large butcher knife to stab himself in the abdomen and chest five times.

Authorities say the officers put pressure on the wounds and called for an ambulance.

Sykes was taken to Allen Hospital, where he is expected to survive his injuries.
