DUBUQUE (KWWL) - It's a sight that hasn't been seen much in Dubuque over the past two decades: peregrine falcons.

But a wild nesting pair has been spotted over the past few weeks, nesting on a ledge outside the fifth floor of the Dubuque County Courthouse.

"It's a big deal because we don't have any peregrine falcons nesting besides one pair in Dubuque, and this would be a great addition to the downtown," said Brian Preston, Director of the Dubuque County Conservation Board.

"Peregrine falcons are a rare bird, a really unique bird, really skilled aerial hunter," Preston added. "It would help control the pigeon population downtown and it would be great for people to be able to watch."

But tragedy struck the falcons Sunday night as high winds blew the eggs off the ledge.

That prompted Preston to install a box-like structure to prevent future eggs from doing the same thing.  However, since he installed the box on Tuesday, the birds have not been spotted again.

"We really got our fingers crossed. We're not sure if they're going to return or not," he said. "We're hoping they'll come and find the structure we put for them."

He added he should know in the next few days if the birds will return this year.  He said if they don't return this year, there's a chance they will next year.
