DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

For two months, Loras College competed with nearly 400 other colleges and universities in the RecycleMania Tournament. 

Loras finished 59 out of 233, recycling more than 70,000 pounds of organic and recyclable materials during the course of the competition . They finished with a  42.88 percent recycling rate in their sixth year of the competition.

Loras out-recycled nearby schools University of Wisconsin-Platteville, the University of Iowa and Wartburg College.

The RecycleMania program is managed by Keep America Beautiful, the nation's leading nonprofit that builds and sustains clean, green and beautifully vibrant communities. Between February 1 and March 28, competing schools recycled or composted 80.1 million pounds of recyclables and organic materials, preventing the release of 129, 411 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2E) into the atmosphere, which is equivalent to preventing annual emissions from 25, 375 cars. The competition is made possible with the sponsorship support of Alcoa Foundation and The Coca-Cola Company.
