Evansdale Police Chief Kent Smock was fired Tuesday night, according to Mayor Doug Faas.

Smock joined the department in 2012, and was a key investigator in the ongoing case of murdered Evansdale cousins Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins.

Faas said he could not release the reason for the firing, calling it a private personnel issue. Smock has been on leave for several weeks, with Sgt. Jeff Jensen working as acting chief.

The decision came after the City Council spent about an hour in closed special session. The council agenda cites the reason for the closed session under Iowa Code 21.5 (i), which reads that a public body may close their doors, "To evaluate the professional competency of an individual whose appointment, hiring, performance, or discharge is being considered when necessary to prevent needless and irreparable injury to that individual's reputation and that individual requests a closed session."

Smock was a longtime fixture in the Black Hawk Co. Sheriff's Office. He retired in 2009.

KWWL reached Smock for comment after the council's decision. He said he doesn't want to add anything at this time.

This comes after Smock stepped down from his duties as Evansdale Fire Chief earlier this year.
