IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Doctors at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics have hit a milestone -- the team's 5,000th solid organ transplant.

That 5,000th transplant mark was hit when a patient received a new liver in March.

The UI Organ Transplant Center, which also serves the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Iowa City, performed its first transplant in 1969. According to a news release, the center provides the only comprehensive transplant program in Iowa serving both adult and pediatric patients.

In honor of having reached 5,000 transplants, UIHC has launched its "Year of Celebrating Transplantation." Several events this year will recognize the importance of organ donation.

One celebration event will be on April 22, 2015. People who have received organ transplants are invited to help plant a tree outside the Medical Research Building. That's also Earth Day.
