WAVERLY (KWWL) -

Family and friends came together Sunday to honor a soldier who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Donny Nichols was killed while serving in Afghanistan on April 13th, 2011.

Nichols served with the 1-133rd Ironman battalion of the Iowa National Guard.

Monday will be the four year anniversary of his death.

Nichols was driving an armored truck that was hit by an improvised explosive device.

Every year since his death, family and friends have taken part in a motorcycle ride to honor him.

The trip starts in Waverly and ends at his grave site in Cedar Falls with prayer and a toast.

His family says while this ride is for Nichols, it's for every soldier,  so they are never forgotten.

"Most of them didn't know him, but they know him now and they feel connected to him and they're very supportive of us and we're all a big family now," said Jeanie Nichols, stepmother.
