WATERLOO (KWWL) -  Hundreds of people partook in spring cleaning Saturday by throwing out potentially hazardous items.

About 400 car and truck loads stopped by the Waterloo Waste Water Treatment Plant to drop off toxic materials and recycled electronics.

People could get rid of old televisions and cleaning materials and help keep the environment safe.

About 50 volunteers helped out.

"This company now has a safe way to dispose of hazardous materials and a lot of electronics that have mercury and other things. They'll be removed so it doesn't hurt the environment more or less," said volunteer Katie Hackman.

Last fall, the same event received more than 29 tons of electronics.
