Cedar Falls Police say they have identified a surveillance photo of a man who may have information about an assault that cost a man his eye.

Police circulated the photo earlier this week, asking for the public's help identifying the man, shown walking out of a building.

It's all after Brett Weichers, 47, was found with severe injuries in the 500 block of Main St. in the early morning hours of March 1. As an officer rounded the corner in his squad car, he saw the apparent attackers running from the scene. He helped Weichers instead of pursuing, so they got away.

Weichers lost an eye because of the attack. He recalled two men running at him just before the beating began.

Capt. Craig Berte told KWWL Friday that since they released to photo to various media outlets, they've received dozens of phone calls. Because of that, they have tracked down the pictured man, and interviewed him.

At this point, police are not releasing his name, since he has not been identified as a suspect in the beating, but merely a person of interest.

The investigation is ongoing.
