Communities mourn crash victims

Posted: Updated:
Five young Iowans lost their lives Thursday in a crash in Benton County.

Three of the crash victims went to school within the Center Point-Urbana School District, while two others had gone to Vinton-Shellsburg Schools.

A cross now stands in place at Highway 150 and Sunset St. where the crash took place. Three families lost loved ones, and are receiving much support from their communities.

Both Vinton and Urbana are close-knit communities, and people say their thoughts and prayers are with the victims.

"It's really a tragedy, I'm still in denial... I'm not even really functioning that well.. I just can't, it's hard to see something like that happen," Michael Seibert said.

Seibert went to school with Triston Randall, one of the boys who died in the crash.

"We hung out in football, it's just really a tragic thing to see somebody you know and somebody you're age just gone in a blink of an eye."

Parents said the incident is tough on their kids, as many of them went to school with some of the victims.

"Three of them in the car that they knew for sure, and it was very devastating. My heart goes out to them," Kim Schneider of Vinton said.

Seibert said the entire community is suffering, but it's times like these in which people come together.

Both superintendents with Center Point-Urbana and Vinton-Shellsburg School Districts said Friday there are extra school counselors on hand for anyone who may need them.

Crowdfunding accounts have been set up for the families of the victims:
