JOHNSON COUNTY (KWWL) -

Thursday the Johnson County Board of Supervisors is set to approve a resolution, supporting Community Identification Cards. It's an official, government-issued ID like a driver's license. The difference is this: you can get a community identification card regardless of your immigration status.

This is a conversation that's been going on in Johnson County for years. The idea behind this is: an ID card that people can use to open bank accounts, get a library card, or use in interactions with police. Anyone would be able to get one and use it anywhere they'd need a government-issued ID.

The Center for Worker Justice, which supports the program, says the ID would help people who don't have a driver's license, spouses and dependents of international students, and recent immigrants. They say your immigration status will not prevent you from being able to get an ID.

The Johnson County Board is set to vote on the idea Thursday evening. If the board approves it, the county could start issuing these ID's sometime this summer.
