Dubuque Police are reporting an increase in scam phone calls from people pretending to represent IRS tax collectors.

The caller claims that an issue with income taxes will result in legal action if not corrected. These people do not represent the actual government body.

"Legitimate federal, state, and local governmental agencies do not make calls of this nature regardless of the circumstance," wrote a Dubuque PD representative.

Authorities are also issuing a reminder that caller ID systems can be spoofed. They recommend you not release personal information or funds over the phone.

Police list the proper guidelines for reporting scams below:

· Victims who incur a loss due to an IRS scam or any government impersonation scam should report the loss to law enforcement.

· Citizens who were not scammed but who wish to report any government imposter scam can report it to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) through the FTC Complaint Assistant at www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov.

· Citizens who want to verify whether they owe federal taxes or penalties should contact the IRS directly. The IRS assistance number is 1-800-829-1040.

· Citizens who were not scammed but who wish to report being contacted by an IRS impersonator can report it to the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Taxpayer Administration (TIGTA): http://www.treasury.gov/tigta or 1-800-366-4484.

If you believe that you may know the identity of this person you are asked to call the Cedar Falls Police Department at 319-273-8612 or the Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers at 855-300-TIPS (8477). Information may be provided anonymously.
