HIAWATHA (KWWL) -

Two people were arrested in Hiawatha Wednesday morning after a mobile meth lab was found during a traffic stop.

Hiawatha Police Chief Dennis Marks says officers saw a vehicle driving without its headlights on near the intersection of Blairs Ferry Road and Center Point Road at about 1:05 a.m.

Marks says the officer initiated a traffic stop and the vehicle pulled over in the 300 block of 1st Avenue in Hiawatha.

He says the officer discovered a mobile meth lab inside the vehicle during the stop.

The driver, 25-year-old Keesha Tu of Cedar Rapids, and a passenger, 29-year-old Michael Berckes of Cedar Rapids, were arrested.

Tu is charged with driving without headlights, driving while revoked, possession of drug precursors, possession of drug paraphernalia, providing false information and manufacturing methamphetamine. Tu was also wanted on previous arrest warrants.

Berckes is charged with possession of drug precursors and manufacturing methamphetamine. He was also wanted on a previous warrant.

The third person in the vehicle was not arrested.

Hiawatha has three clandestine lab trained officers, two of those were on scene along with Hiawatha Fire Department.
