WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A former Waterloo East High School teacher and coach has been sentenced after pleading guilty to having a sexual relationship with a student.

Daniel Ankrum, 32, was hired as a family and consumer science teacher in 2013. He was also the head coach for girls cross country and assistant coach for girls track.

Investigators say that Ankrum had a relationship with a 16-year-old girl from January to March of 2014. Luke Guthrie, Ankrum's attorney, says the girl was a member of one of his teams.

Guthrie says Ankrum was sentenced to a year in a Waterloo residential facility and ten years probation. He must register as a sex offender until his probation ends.
