Waterloo celebrates "Gadson Strong Day"

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -  Following his championship match, Kyven Gadson wanted just one thing: ice cream. On Monday, he got more than his share.

Waterloo celebrated "Gadson Strong Day" with a proclamation in front of the city council, followed by a reception at the Dan Gable Museum, complete with Wells Blue Bunny Ice Cream.

Gadson was honored with speeches by 2 other national champs from Waterloo, former Iowa coach Dan Gable and former Wartburg coach Jim Miller. Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson also took part in honoring the city's 13th NCAA wrestling champion, but 1st in 27 years.

The entire experience the last 3 weeks has been a whirlwind for the Iowa State senior.

"I've been asked a lot about ice cream, but it's just been a blessing," said Gadson, "a little bit overwhelming at times, but at the same time it's been a blessing. It's been an awesome ride."

Gadson said he's retired from competition, but didn't completely shut the door on competing past college. Gable, an Olympic gold medalist, certainly hopes he reconsiders.

"There's different levels of excellence, and he's got a couple more higher yet.
