WATERLOO (KWWL) - The Waterloo City Council Monday night agreed to help the Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138 move from its current location, as part of a major renovation project at KWWL.

KWWL plans significant remodeling of its 101-year old building and an expansion of its current property at 500 East 4th Street in downtown Waterloo.

The renovations are necessary to help keep KWWL competitive in its current location. The multi-million dollar project also re-enforces KWWL's ongoing commitment of service to Waterloo, Cedar Falls, the Cedar Valley and all of Eastern Iowa.

In its major investment, KWWL will spend more than two and a half million dollars to renovate its 4-story building, which was built in 1914. KWWL will also expand its parking lot to include the current American Legion property.

Monday night, the Waterloo City Council agreed to help the American Legion Post 138 move from its location right next door to KWWL to a new location at 728 Commercial Street.

The City will purchase the Legion property for $300,000. and demolish the old Legion building. Then, the City of Waterloo will convey the property to KWWL for $1.00.  KWWL will also receive a 7-year property tax abatement.

The City has agreed to help the Legion with relocation and building improvement costs up to $100,000.
