Someone You Should Know - Bob Maricle

Posted: Updated:
FAIRBANK (KWWL) - At 91-years-old, Bob Maricle remembers the day he joined the Fairbank Fire Department like it was yesterday.

"I went out to my first fire call riding the back of that old Model A on the dusty roads to a corn cob fire," Maricle said. "I'll never forget that."

Maricle moved up the road from Oran to Fairbank when he finished his service in the second World War.

"1948. I came to town in 47 and I was just here a couple months and they said you're a fireman," Maricle said.

Maricle decided not to renew his certificate on March 31, after almost seven decades of service in the Fairbank community.

"On behalf of the Fairbank fire department and the entire Fairbank community we appreciate Bob and his 67 years of service," Brad Gordon with the Fairbank Fire Department said.

Maricle was also honored at the last fire department banquet for being an EMT for 42 years.

"That'll be the last plaque I get," Maricle said.

"We already told him that just because he's retired from the EMS and fire department that doesn't mean that he can't come down and help us out," Ted Vorwald with the Fairbank Fire Department said.

Even though Maricle's hip no longer will allow him to fight fires anymore, he still finds a way to stay connected.

"I'm going to go to the meetings because we always have good food at the meetings. I can't get by without that," Maricle said.

He will still have a pager and a get all the emergency calls to his cell phone.

After going out more than 3,000 calls throughout the years.

"And I probably missed 3,000," Maricle joked.

What Maricle said he'll remember most about the last 67 years: "When the call is over and you've helped someone, you feel kinda good."
