Fire crews responded to a fire at a landfill and recycling center Friday evening.

The Iowa City Fire Department were called to the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center at 3900 Hebl Avenue SW for a report of a grass fire at 9:08 p.m.

Hills, Tiffin, and North Liberty fire crews were called in to assist. Johnson County Ambulance Service and the Iowa City Police Department were also on scene.

The fire was quickly extinguished and crews were cleared at 11:05 p.m. The exact cause has not been determined, but Battalion Chief Brian Platz says there's no immediate indication the fire was set intentionally.

In 2012, the landfill experienced a significant fire that spread to the rubber tire aggregate liner of a new garbage cell. Landfill operation procedures are in place to ensure recently dumped garbage is not exposed to any tire aggregate.

The landfill remains open to the general public.
