As the temperature starts rising across the country, many homeowners decide to tackle some home improvements -- and crooked contractors and scammers start popping up like those pesky dandelions.

Consumer Reports has some tips to help keep you from getting scammed:

1. Avoid contractors who contact you unsolicited, and get recommendations from friends, neighbors or relatives.

2. Check with your state consumer protection agency and the Better Business Bureau.

3. Search the web for the contractor's name or the company's name with words like "complaints" or "reviews."

4. Know your rights. Some states allow you three days to cancel a home-improvement contract.

5. Get everything in writing and don't rely on spoken promises.
