Surprises help babies learn, study finds

Posted: Updated:

Researchers at Johns Hopkins found that the element of surprise is a key to babies' learning.

Their study involved rolling a ball down a ramp, while babies watched; they found the babies weren't that impressed when the ball stopped at a while after rolling down the ramp. However, they found that when they used a magic trick to make it seem like the ball were going through a wall, the babies took notice; some of the babies even banged the ball on a table to see if it's solid.

Those from the study say it shows that babies didn't learn more from surprising objects, but they did go out of their way to understand them.
