Prison system partners with jobs program to help rehabilitated inmates

Posted: Updated:

The IowaWORKS regional office is partnering with the Iowa Department of Corrections in order to help offenders find jobs when they're released from prison.

Beth Townsend, the director of Iowa Workforce Development says "our hope is that working with ex-offenders and helping them gain education, job skills and other basic skills, that we can help them prepare to re-enter society and start over once they leave prison.”

Offenders will get to take National Career Readiness Certification assessments, which are often a requirement from employers statewide. They'll be tested in math, reading for information and locating information.

Offenders who score well enough can get a platinum, gold, silver, or bronze certificate.

Many prisons across the state have a workforce adviser, whose main goal to deal with issues employers have about hiring ex-offenders.
