MASON CITY (KWWL) - A cat found in a duffel bag that had been thrown into the Winnebago River has a new home.
The cat became known as Winnie, named for the river.

A Mason City couple witnessed a man throw a duffel bag in the river. They discovered the live cat inside the wet bag.

Ken Avery of St. Paul, Minnesota heard about what happened.  His cat had died in January, and was ready for a new pet.
Ken finalized Winnie's adoption today at the Humane Society of North Iowa.

A Mason City man, William Hill, turned himself in for throwing the cat in the river.
Hill is charged with animal torture, a simple misdemeanor under Iowa law.
