Eastern Iowa fire claims barn, classic car

Posted: Updated:

With structure and grass fires popping up all over the KWWL viewing area tonight, a few fire departments are chalking it up to dry conditions and high winds. However, there are no county burn bans in Eastern Iowa.

Mark Distler lost his barn near Gilbertville Wednesday afternoon. He said he doesn't know what sparked it, but he knows what he lost.

"I had by '73 Monte Carlo in there," he said. "I bought it brand-new, that's the biggest thing."

It spun out of control quickly, with winds whipping the flames higher. It only took minutes for the structure to be completely consumed, collapsing before crews could get there. The car was lost, along with pictures of his children.

"I just saw everything burning," he said.

"It was a burning inferno, really large," said Dick Gleason, a Gilbertville firefighter. "Luckily those trees didn't catch fire. The branches were high enough."

Crews knocked it down before it could spread to the home under construction next door.

It's been a problem statewide this week -- a grass fire spun out of control near Sioux City Wednesday, and a burn in Hamilton County claimed several vehicles Tuesday.

As for Mark -- he's just glad no one was hurt.
