DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Russell Knight, President and CEO of Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, announced he will retire later this year.

He's pegged October 2, 2015 as the date he'll leave the office for good.

Knight has been the head of Mercy in Dubuque for 18 years.  According to a press release from the hospital, "the medical center has been recognized for consistently high performance in the areas of service, quality, and patient and physician satisfaction."

Knight said his decision to step down was not an easy one. “It has been an honor and a privilege to work side-by-side with the outstanding people of Mercy for the past 18 years,” he said. “The organization has accomplished some great things and I appreciate the excellent work done by our employees every day, as well as the incredible support we've received from our Board of Trustees, our medical staff, our donors, the entire community, and our health system. Most importantly, I appreciate the patients and families who have entrusted Mercy with their care. I will miss them all.”

Board Chair Merle Santjer said, “Obviously we accepted Rusty's resignation with very mixed emotions. While we are happy for him and his family, we are saddened to see him leave the leadership role where he has served with such distinction. Rusty will be missed tremendously, both professionally and personally, by everyone.”

Jeffcoat noted that the search for Knight's successor will begin immediately. It is hoped the new President will be named prior to Knight's departure in October. “It won't be easy to replace someone who is so widely admired and respected,” she said. “However, every effort will be made to ensure the transition occurs as seamlessly as possible and to ensure the great services and high levels of performance continue at Mercy – Dubuque without disruption.”
