CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - On April 17, the University of Northern Iowa will host the 47th annual Elementary Literacy Conference.

The conference will be held in the Schindler Education Center with the theme of "Literacy, Leading and Learning: Integrating Inquiry, STEM, and the Common Core."

The keynote speaker for the event will be Steve Jenkins, author and illustrator of many nonfiction picture books directed toward young readers, including "What Do You Do with a Tail Like This?" which won the Caldecott Honor.

Jenkins will be available after the conference to autograph books.

There will be a pre-conference event at the Grout Museum/Bluedorn Science Imaginarium in Waterloo on Thursday, April 16, from 4 to 7 p.m.

During this pre-conference, there will be special after-hour science demonstrations, and Jenkins will be available to autograph books.

Both events are sponsored by the UNI College of Education, Bluedorn Science Imaginarium, Pioneer Graphics and Abrams Learning Trends.

The conference is free to UNI students and faculty, $45 for retired faculty and $90 for the general public.
