Iowa unemployment numbers improve

Fewer Iowan's are out of work, according new numbers from Iowa Workforce Development.

Seasonally adjusted unemployment dropped to 4.1% in February, down from 4.2% in January. That's also down from a year ago, when the jobless rate was 4.4%

Nationwide, the unemployment rate was 5.5% in February.

“Iowa's unemployment rate continued to trend down in February,” said Beth Townsend, director of Iowa Workforce Development. “While nonfarm employment decreased slightly this month, so too did the number of unemployed workers. Virtually all employment and labor force indicators continue to show improvement compared to last year.”

Total, IWD estimates there are 70,100 unemployed workers statewide. That's 4000 fewer than a year ago.

Non-farm employment dropped 400 jobs. Iowa also experienced losses in state and local governments. Goods producing sectors experience growth.
