A Maquoketa woman had pleaded guilty to charges of mail fraud, after faking a pregnancy to con money from an Eastern Iowa man.

Johna Loreen Vandemore, 34, was sentenced in Federal Court on Friday to 18 months in prison. She was ordered to serve three years of supervised release after that, and pay $95,850 in restitution to the victim.

In 2007, Vandemore was dating a man, and told him she was pregnant. He agreed to support her and the baby. However, there was no child.

Vandemore, who was married to another man at the time, defrauded her victim for more than 90 payments of $1000. She routed the money through a post office in Bettendorf.

When her husband questioned the payments, she apparently told him that they were from prior sales of the supplement Herbalife. Police believe this con ran from 2007 to 2013.

The case was investigated by the FBI and the Bettendorf Police.
