IDPH promoting colorectal cancer screening in Iowa bars, restaurants

Posted: Updated:

It may not be a popular topic of dinner table discussion, the Iowa Department of Public Health is trying to promote colorectal cancer screenings through advertising at bars and restaurants.

Through a partnership with Doll Distributing, of Des Moines, the IDPH is expanding a drink coasters that encourage people to get checked. The IDPH is also expanding the program into Waterloo by working with Fahr Beverages.

They say a colonoscopy discussion may not be appealing, but it's an important subject to keep Iowans safe and healthy. Coasters will feature trivia questions and 'humerous' answers.

"We realize colorectal cancer is not something that naturally comes up in conversation,” said Jeanna Jones of the IDPH Chronic Disease Prevention and Management bureau. “Unfortunately, Iowa has the fifth highest percentage of late-stage colorectal cancer diagnoses. Late stage colorectal cancer is difficult to treat, but when caught in the early stages, it is 90 percent treatable.”

Colorectal cancer often has no visible symptons until a very late stage.
