CERRO GORDO COUNTY (KWWL) -

A Charles City woman was killed Wednesday afternoon after her vehicle was rear-ended by another vehicle along Highway 18 in Cerro Gordo County.

Mary Calpito, 34, of Charles City was pronounced brain dead at Mercy Hospital in Mason City and died shortly thereafter, according to her family. No one else was injured in the crash.

According to the state patrol, Calpito was driving her Toyota Corolla eastbound on Hwy. 18 in Cerro Gordo County when she was hit from behind by a GMC Envoy driven by Steve Ward, 53, of Greene.

The impact caused Calpito's vehicle to crash into a ditch.

Troopers say Calpito was driving below the posted speed limit at the time.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by Nora Springs Fire, Nora Springs Police, the Floyd County Sheriff's Office and Mason City Ambulance.
