ISU's Gadson finishes as a champion

ST. LOUIS (KWWL) -  The ending of the script couldn't have been any sweeter. Iowa State senior Kyven Gadson locked up Kevin Snyder of Ohio State, threw him to his back, and moments later was able to call himself an NCAA Champion.

The Waterloo East high alum pinned Snyder just moments in to the second period of the title match at 197 pounds for his first NCAA title, and 3rd career All-American finish.

The victory was sweet for a wrestler that nearly quit the sport 2 years earlier following the tragic death of his father Willie, who had been battling bone cancer.  Instead of quitting, however, he found a new motivation. In the end, it took him to the top.

"It's awesome," Gadson told ESPN following the win, "You know I love my dad. I'm about to start tearing up! It's awesome. My mom, my dad, everybody, we worked for this."

With the victory, Kyven Gadson became the 13th Waterloo native to win an NCAA wrestling championship.
