IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Nearly 130 University of Iowa students participated in Alternative Spring Break, to address hunger across the county.

A group of about a dozen students returned from Indianapolis, Saturday, where they volunteered at churches and area food banks to pack food for children living in that area who go hungry.

"I wanted to do something productive with my time rather than just party the whole entire week," said freshman Kelly Dudar.

This year was Dudar's first time going.

Fraternity and Sorority life at UI, sponsors the trip and this year they were able to send students to Atlanta, Denver, Pittsburgh and Dallas.

"Actually make an impact on a community, even though it's not my own community I wanted to help a community that's suffering a little more than Iowa City or my home town," said Dudar.

The Alternative Spring Break is aimed at promoting service learning, social justice, and community building withing UI students.
