CHARLES CITY (AP) -

Police say the Charles City fire chief struck an 86-year-old woman in a crosswalk while driving a department vehicle.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that Charles City Fire Chief Eric Whipple hit Gladys Kellogg Tuesday in a downtown crosswalk.

Kellogg is listed in fair condition at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

The Floyd County Sheriff's Department says Whipple made left turn when a light changed from red to green, and that Kellogg also had a green signal to cross the road.

Whipple tells officers that he didn't see Kellogg when he made the turn and hit her. The sheriff says Whipple wasn't responding to an emergency at the time of the accident.

Authorities say the case remains under investigation. Whipple has not been charged.
