Mason City woman claims she was fired for being pregnant

MASON CITY (AP) -

A woman has filed a lawsuit against a Clear Lake company, accusing it of firing her because she was pregnant.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports Heather Villegas of Mason City had been working for S & K Enterprises Inc. when she became pregnant in March 2014.

Villegas says she was about seven months into her pregnancy when she was notified she was being laid off.

She said she was told the company's officials were concerned that she could slip and fall in the winter and that it was too much of a risk for the company to continue to employ her.

She's seeking damages in the lawsuit that include attorney fees and court costs.

Attempts to reach a company official by the newspaper were unsuccessful.
