Walk and Bike Event in Johnson County

Posted: Updated:

As construction moves forward on Mehaffey Bridge, which spans the Iowa River/Coralville Reservoir in unincorporated Johnson County, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors announced a special “Walk and Bike First” event that will allow residents to get a preview of the new bridge at a leisurely pace. Parking will be available at the boat ramp.

Following a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 pm on Saturday, March 28, on the west side of the bridge, the trail bridge deck will be temporarily opened to pedestrians and bicyclists, and will remain open throughout the weekend. Beginning Monday, March 30, the trail deck will be used for motor vehicle traffic over the bridge. At that time, traffic will be restricted to a single lane with stoplight control.

As part of the bridge construction plan, the dedicated pedestrian walkway/bicycle trail deck was completed first, to support vehicle traffic while the old bridge is removed and future traffic lanes are constructed. This plan allows for at least one lane of traffic to remain open throughout the final phases of construction. Brief bridge closures, however, may be required.

In the event of inclement weather, the Walk and Bike First event will be cancelled and will NOT be rescheduled.
