CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Cedar Rapids man hired by the school district to take care of children, is accused of having indecent contact with two of them.

Cedar Rapids police say they've arrested 28-year old Maurice Jones and charged him with two counts of illegal contact with a child.

Cedar Rapids School District leaders say Jones was an on-site supervisor for a school district daycare, at Coolidge Elementary.

Jones is accused of inappropriately touching two children under 12-years-old with their clothes on for the purpose of sexual gratification.

He was hired by the Cedar Rapids School District in 2011 serving as the supervisor of a before and after school program at the Five Seasons Daycare Center at Coolidge Elementary School

District leaders sent out a letter notifying parents of the alleged abuse. The letter says that Jones is no longer employed with the district.

"Our primary focus is the welfare and safety of students and those impacted by this alleged incident. We regret that this situation exists. It is important to remember that while these charges remain allegations, we take them very seriously," stated in the letter to parents.

Mary Ellen Maske, Deputy Superintendent with Cedar Rapids schools says Jones resigned from his position on February 11, 2015.

She says the district strives to hire "quality employees."

"We do reference checks, we also do criminal background checks and we do adult and child abuse on those applicants on those positions before hiring them," said Maske.

Jones was the on-site supervisor for about 45 students, however he did have to report to a director who is also on-site.

Cedar Rapids Police say the abuse allegations happened sometime between May 2014 and January 2015.

"At this point in time it is a criminal investigation and really our job is not to investigate this and it is in the hands of the police at this point in time," said Maske.

District staff and the police are asking parents with children attending the Coolidge Five Season Daycare site, who have any additional information or questions about the alleged sexual abuse, to call Investigator Jennifer Roberts at the Cedar Rapids Police Department 319-286-5400.
