2 saved after Waterloo house fire

Posted: Updated:

Heavy smoke and flames filled a home on Dawson Street in Waterloo. While three kids were able to escape, two people were still stuck inside when they arrived.

"We managed to get one person out the side window, and we needed to take the second person out the back door where there was less fire and less smoke," said Pat Treloar, Waterloo Fire Chief.

Those people are expected to be OK.

Waterloo Fire is now calling this house fire suspicious.

"The general location of the fire led us to say we better do a little more investigating," said Treloar.

That's where Pogo the dog came in.

Pogo is from Mason City and is with the State Fire Marshall's Office. Her job is to sniff out substances used to start fires.

"If the dog smells an accelerant, she'll sit down and motion with her nose at the area where she smells an accelerant," said Treloar.

Chief Treloar says they sent several samples to the State Fire Marshall's Office. He says they should get the results back in a few weeks.
