Eastern Iowa celebrates Pi Day

Posted: Updated:
Saturday, March 14 is Pi Day!

Of course the mathematical constant, 3.14, is honored, but along with the numbers, pizza pies, dessert pies and math lovers are drawn into the equation.

Opportunities to celebrate Pi Day are scattered across eastern Iowa.

In downtown Cedar Falls Saturday, people can find contests of all kinds in honor of Pi, including pizza-eating, pie-baking and even nerd costume contests. Participating businesses will also offer pie-inspired drinks and shopping specials all day.

In Cedar Rapids, the Mathnasium at the Fountains will hold a Pi Day Open House from 2-5 p.m. Pi-related math games, tips for parents and prizes will be part of the open house.

Loras College in Dubuque celebrates Pi Day by hosting math competitions Saturday. Two competitions will be held as part of the 2015 Great Plains Math League High School Math Tournament.

Events will also take place in Mount Vernon, as the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Development Group (CDG) will host a fundraiser from 2-4 p.m. at the First St. Community Center, located at 221 First St. NE.

The fundraiser will include carnival games, pie tasting and several "pie in the face" photo opportunities.
