IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Doctors will diagnose 16,900 new cancers in Iowa this year -- that's according to the Cancer in Iowa 2015 report.

This year's report highlighted melanoma which doctors say is one of the fastest growing cancers in our state.

Young women who tan are especially at risk. According to the study, each time a person uses a tanning bed or sunbathes increases their risk of melanoma. Sunburn also increases the risk of melanoma.

"About a year ago I went to see my dermatologist actually to have another mole removed," said Jennifer Schlichting, Melanoma Survivor. "They saw what ended up being a melanoma on my right shoulder."

Doctors say many people think of cancer as an older person's disease -- but they've seen cases increase among younger Iowans, especially younger women.

The State Health Registry of Iowa, based in the University of Iowa College of Public Health, released the report
