Penn State stuns Iowa, Hawks done in Chicago

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (KWWL) -

A costly technical foul and a late-game slump cost Iowa as the Hawkeyes dropped their conference tournament opener 68-59 to 13th-seeded Penn State.

Despite a poor shooting effort, Iowa seemed poised to reach the quarterfinals after Mike Gesell gave them a 32-21 lead with a traditional 3-point play with 18:29 remaining.

The Hawkeyes, however, would go the next 7:58 without scoring a single field goal, missing 10 straight shots from the floor.

Soon after, Iowa suffered another self-inflicted blow: Referees whistled Fran McCaffery for a technical foul after the Iowa coach argued a basket interference non-call against Penn State.

The Nittany Lions responded with a 10-3 run, which kept them ahead for good.

Aaron White led Iowa with 21 points, while Jared Uthoff added 17. The Hawkeyes as a whole, however, shot just 26 percent from the floor.

D.J. Newbill led Penn State with 18 in the win.
