Coralville seeking state money to help pay for arena project

CORALVILLE (KWWL) -

Coralville officials are planning a 7,000-seat arena and sports training center, hoping to draw sporting events and concerts to the Iowa River Landing area.

The city will seek state economic development money for the $40 million project.

Coralville Mayor John Lundell says the arena would have concerts as well as sports such as basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer and wrestling. The facility could be converted into an ice arena for hockey.

Josh Schamberger is president of the Iowa City Coralville Convention and Visitors Bureau, and he says arena operators would "look to get acts similar to what you're seeing in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines."
