A consumer group thinks Mattel's high-tech Hello Barbie is a bad idea.

Officials at Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood have posted a petition on their site demanding Mattel abandon the project because Mattel will have the ability to "listen in" on kids at play.

Mattel executives reject the claim.

In an emailed statement to USA Today, a spokesperson for Mattel says Hello Barbie's technology features safeguards "to ensure that stored data is secure and can't be accessed by unauthorized users."

Hello Barbie is an internet-connected smart doll with speech recognition technology that lets her respond to questions and words spoken to her.

She's set to arrive on store shelves this fall.
