Iowa City to host Special Olympics Mid-Winter Tournament this weekend

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The 26th annual Special Olympics Mid-Winter Tournament kicks off this weekend in Iowa City.

The event is expected to draw nearly 1,000 athletes from across the state.

Iowa City will be represented by athletes who are members of the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department's Special Populations Involvement (SPI) program.

Events kick off Friday night, March 13 for the opening ceremonies, banquet dinner and dance.

they will be held at the Marriott Hotel at Iowa River Landing in Coralville.

Competitive events will get underway beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 14 at the University of Iowa Field House and Iowa City West High School.

Events at the UI Field House will include team basketball and powerlifting, while basketball skills and cheerleading competition will take place at Iowa City West High School.

Area residents are invited to attend the tournament to watch the competition and show support for athletes from Iowa City and around the state.
