MT. VERNON (KWWL) -

Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School won their 18th Iowa Academic Decathlon competition in the last 19 years.

Jefferson scored 42,321 points, beating the second place team by more than 6,000 points.

The team will move on to represent Iowa at the national academic decathlon being held in California April 15-18.

Team members include Tommy Waltmann, Lauren Brown, Drake Krambeer, Cora Lassen, Gina Buelow, Sabrina Martin, Chase Muenzenmeyer, and Logan Thompson. The team is coached by teacher Kevin Darrow.

In the large school category, Cedar Rapids Kennedy took 3rd place, Iowa City West took 4th place, Cedar Rapids Washington took 9th place and Waterloo East took 11th place.

In the small school category, Grundy Center-Dike-New Hartford took 3rd place, Iowa Falls-Alden took 4th place, Union took 5th place, Tipton took 6th place, Columbus Catholic took 8th place, Aplington-Parkersburg took 10th place and Janesville took 12th place.
