CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department is urging everyone to stay off  waterways that are covered by thin layers of ice.

The recent warming trend has melted a significant layer of ice, making waterways unsafe.

Be especially careful near bridges, thoroughfares, culverts and wherever else there may be currents flowing underneath as ice in these areas may be very thin or non-existent.

Watch out for thin, clear or honeycombed ice. Dark snow and dark ice are other signs of weak spots.

In 2014, the Fire Department responded to 8 water and ice-related rescues, 11 swift water rescues, and 3 watercraft rescues.

While no incidents or injuries have been reported this month, the Fire Department and other City departments are proactively cautioning citizens about thin ice to prevent any tragedies.
