CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The woman impaled by a pipe during a car crash is now in fair condition at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Kelsey Cummings was in a single vehicle crash earlier this week. She hit a gate and a pipe went through the front of her vehicle, through her pelvic area, and into the backseat.

She called 911 on her own and told the operator "I need help. I'm in a car accident. I'm going to die if I don't get help."

Cummings was conscious as fire crews worked around her, dismantling her car. They left the pipe in her for surgeons to remove at the hospital because it was not impacting her ability to breathe.

Cummings is set to be moved from ICU to another unit at the hospital.
